The Girl In The Tower

There once was a girl who was wasting away,

In a dark cold tower she spent most of the day.

The outside never really knew,

This girl who longed for skies of blue.

Her smiles would sometimes come along,

When she heard a cherished lover’s song.

A song that spoke of hopes and dreams,

A song that told what love could mean.

So every night by the pale moonlight,

She would send her prayers to flight.

Dear God in heaven, hear my plea,

Send a lover to rescue me.

One day a dove with feathers pale,

Landed on her window rail.

She touched it softly on the beak,

She leaned in close, it touched her cheek.

The dove then flew inside her room,

It pale soft feathers lit the gloom.

To her surprise a man appeared,

His smile assured her, no need to fear.

He gently took her by the hand,

He whispered I’ve come to be your man.

I’ve watched you from the tower high,

I’ve grown to love you as times gone by.

I could not reach you when first I tried,

Your heart was covered, the thorns inside.

I had to bare my soul and take a chance,

In order to save you from this trance.

I fought the dragon that guards the door,

I saved your petals from the tower floor.

I made a trade with the pale soft dove,

So that I could show you the depths of love.

But I learned today that in spite of me,

You alone can set yourself free.

I can fight your dragons and rescue you,

But you hold the power for your dream to come true.

If you truly want me to be your man,

Then you must first take hold my hand.

You must say that love alone matters,

Then the trance you’re under will completely shatter.

I looked into his eyes so deep,

I knew this was a love I longed to keep.

So I spoke the words with all my might,

Love alone matters I screamed to the night.

The sky began to clear away,

The blue light shone through clouds once grey.

He gently took me by the hand,

Love alone matters, I understand.
