THE AWAKENING

There are so many ways to wake people up.  Some people need soft music playing. Others need the music blaring so that it wakes the people next door up as well. I have four children and when they lived with me, they all four would wake up differently.

Because this is true in the physical sense, I wonder if it holds true in the spiritual sense. Ephesians 5:14 states, “Awake O sleeper, rise up from the dead, Christ will give you light.”

When I was thinking about this verse, I thought about how I feel lying in bed with my eyes closed. If, someone turns the light on, this creates an urgency to open my eyes. I need to find the source of that light and see what is happening.

When your eyes are opened, you let light in. If your eyes are closed all you see is darkness. Light exposes the true character of everything because light makes everything easier to see.  It’s time to wake up from our spiritual sleep.

Have you ever felt like you were just going through the motions, perhaps doing things, but you’re asleep? What will it take to wake you up?  What will it take to awaken your soul and let it come to life? How can you live in the way you were meant to be?

There is a song by a band called “Skillet” called “Awake and Alive.”  To be fully alive, you must first awaken from your sleep. I know at one point in my life, I was going through motions, never really living. I had a true experience with Jesus. It made me “Awake and Alive.” I don’t want to ever return to the way I was. A person pretending to know the gospel but not really living it. That’s not me anymore. I’m alive and I won’t go back! “I know what I believe this time, and I’m awake and I’m alive…Forever I will live for you!” These words from the song are a great mantra. You must know what you believe in.

What does it look like? You drop all the pretenses of trying to look perfect and you live a life just loving people. My goal, and I am not saying I do this perfectly, is to love others like Jesus did. I want to show the fruits of the Spirit we learn about in Galatians 5:22-23. If people don’t see Jesus in my life, I am not doing a good job of representing Him. I want to show love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
