Fairy Tale Thinking

There is something called Fairy Tale Thinking, where a person imagines a prince on a white horse will one day come and whisk them away to their land far away. It’s the princess forever being saved by the prince.  It’s Snow White being woke up by the prince. It’s Red Riding Hood being saved from the wolf. It’s all of those characters we read about, having someone who rescues them, just in the nick of time. In the moment before sure death and destruction would come, they are saved.

We have all at one point in our lives longed to be rescued from something. A bad marriage, a test we were going to flunk in school. A bad date we were on. You can insert your own bad moment into the blank. The point is, there is often times a sticky situation where we need a rescue. We want someone to come along that will save us from the mess we have gotten ourselves into.  When I was growing up, I always longed for Prince Charming. I wanted him to save me from the tower I lived in. I was so dramatic. I knew I was destined to be a princess one day, especially because I looked good in sparkle. So, I waited and waited. One day I married the man I thought was my hero and it turned out he wasn’t really my prince at all. He just put me in a different prison. With Fairy Tale Thinking, we are always looking for something whimsical to save us. We don’t look to logical facts or think clearly about the solutions in front of us. The Bible tells us in 1 Timothy 1:4 “We should not give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.” It is so important to know these fairy tales are just stories passed down and not something we put more value in. When we let this type of thinking become more important to us and we see all men through the eyes of Prince Charming. We will make real men fall short. No man can measure up to Prince Charming. Why? Because he doesn’t exist. He is a fable, written about by someone’s imagination of what they would like for their imaginary Prince to be.Don’t get caught up in Fairy Tale Thinking, look to Jesus, who is the author and the finisher of your faith. To the Bible, the book that can help you determine how a man should treat you and never settled for less. ©2021 Marsha L. Brown
